First-year German is a three-trimester course which must be taken in sequence or with instructor approval. This three-trimester course is for students who want to begin world language study and enables them to function effectively in more than one culture through a basic knowledge of the language, the people and the cultures of German-speaking countries. Students who successfully complete the sequence may approach proficiency at an A1 level* for listening, spoken interaction and spoken production, reading and writing (according to European Language Portfolio / Iowa Linguafolio) or a low-novice (according to ACTFL guidelines).

*The Basic User of a language at the A1 level can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. He/she can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. He/she can interact in a simply way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help. (Conseil de l’Europe / Council of Europe, Europäisches Sprachenportfolio, Teil 1, Sprachenpass)
